In our grade 2 conversation club, not only do we focus on developing our speaking skills, we also focus on higher order thinking skills. First our students were asked if it was ok to make mistakes. They applied reason to their answers and some students debated and defended their responses. Then the teacher introduced the concept of Growth Mindset and Fixed Mindset.
In this lesson we focused on the difference of both concepts and the importance it has on our learning journey. Students understood that fixed mindset students believe their basic abilities, their intelligence, their talents, are just fixed traits whereas growth mindset students understand that their talents and abilities can be developed through effort, good teaching and persistence.
Grade 2 students were asked to share fixed mindset statements they have said before and turn them into growth mindset statements. Our young learners once more realised that there is always room and time to reach our full potential and that we do not need to be afraid of the challenged ahead.
Here are some of the growth mindset statements our students shared:
“I can learn from my mistakes”
“There is always opportunity to learn”
“I can learn from my friends”
“It’s ok to take my time”
“I can choose to learn and grow”
