103 Elif Özküçükler Grade 2 EnglIsh PhonIcs Phonics is an effective reading and spelling tool. Through systematic phonics instruction, children learn to identify all the different sounds and spelling patterns in the English language. The children use this knowledge when reading and writing. In our Grade 2 English programme we have a weekly phonics lesson. The students practise the new sound and spelling pattern through fun activities including games, videos, stories and writing tasks. Not only do the students learn and practise the sounds but they also learn a lot of new vocabulary words! Here is what some of our students have to say about our phonics lessons. Doruk Can GÖRGÜN Learning phonics is important. It helps me to write words and sentences and it helps me to read. We practise phonics in our phonics and literacy centre lessons. Elif Çağla ERTUĞRUL Phonics lessons are fun! I like the phonics videos. They are funny! The videos help me to learn the sounds. I also learn many new words. Can MOLER I love learning all the different sounds! I always think of new words for the sounds that we learn and share them with my friends. Fred the Frog helps me to practise the sounds! Masal ŞENGÇÖMEN My favourite phonics sounds are ‘ay’ and ‘igh’. I know many words that have these sounds, for example – holiday, play, today, night and highlighter. Lal GÖKÇİMEN I like doing phonics activities in my notebook. I like writing and grouping the words. Phonics helps me to read and write words. It is fun!
