148 Ann Uluer Readıng Lıfe at Home How many of us truly read books ‘like they’re Gold’ or do we know what it means to read books ‘like they’re Gold?’ Our goal for students this year, as 4th Grade English teachers, was to make reading a lifelong habit by genuinely showing how reading can be for pleasure, enjoyment, and understanding. Reading also helps to improve research skills and stimulate curiosity. Granted our task was ambitious and curriculum driven, but when you trust in yourself, be prepared to be surprised. Our students proved to themselves that, given the right tools, they would not only succeed but exceed expectations. Students expressed that they took their reading home and turned reading into family time; this accomplished one of our goals. Students are now talking about the books that they are reading and exchanging ideas, understanding themes and enjoying reading, thus, proving to use higher level thinking skills. Here are some of the comments from our seasoned Golden Readers: Nikol BENEFRAHİM How have you become a stronger reader? How do you know? Yes! I’ve become a stronger reader because I read a lot at home and at school. I keep track of my reading in my reading log. I enjoy reading library books especially. In the beginning of the year I didn’t read many books, but this summer I plan to read more. Engin ATEŞ What dıscoverıes have you made thıs year about authors and genres? Whıch author do you enjoy readıng? I discovered Ronald Dahl! I read Charlie and the Chocolate factory. I like his books because they are fiction, when I read them I go to different places. I realized the sky isn’t the limit and anything is possible. Doruk UĞAR How has your preferences and outlook towards readıng changed? I used to only read Raz-kids at home, but this year I bring books from our library. I really enjoy Mrs. Moira’s SEVstoryline on Thursday nights and participate actively. Bora Kartal ÖZGÜNER What ıs your favorıte part about takıng readıng home? I like reading Dave Pilkey I read in my bed at night and in my free time. I also read Raz-kids. I take books home because I have more free time and I can read quietly my favorite books in a place I choose. I like comic books but after growth mindset, I started to get interested in adventure chapter books. I play less computer games now too.
