150 Moira Simes SEVstorylIne: An InteractIve OnlIne Read Aloud What makes Izmir SEV Primary School unique is that it gives great importance to reading. We encourage students to read every day at school and at home because we believe establishing a reading life enables students to become engaged and motivated readers. Our school has established a strong reading culture by providing student with a school wide DEAR time on Friday mornings, guest readers who read to us, in class independent reading, Tuesday Bring Your Socks read aloud, library lessons, interactive read aloud lessons, guided reading in small groups and a Reading Buddy program. In addition to establishing a reading culture at school we have also extended it to our students’ homes. Our English Head of Department, Moira Simes, created a platform called SEVstoryline, an interactive online read aloud. She has been reading live from home to Grade 3 and Grade 4 students every Thursday evening. From the comfort of their homes, students can see her, hear her and share their thinking or answer her questions in the chat box provided. Ms. Moira also scans the books and displays it on this platform in order for students to read along and look at the pictures as she reads aloud. First, she goes through SEVstoryline rules and vocabulary before starting the read aloud. At the end of the session Ms. Moira and students discuss the story, author’s purpose, and favorite parts. Students also take a mini comprehension quiz to assess understanding. SEVstoryline has become a favorite home reading activity! It helps students make personal connections that inspire them to think more deeply, to feel more wholeheartedly, and to become more curious listeners. Reading builds foundational skills, introduces new vocabulary, provides a model of fluent, expressive reading and helps students recognize what reading for pleasure is all about. In addition to its influence of developing literacy and academic achievement, parents have also been enjoying SEVstoryline! They can witness their child using their reading, writing and listening skills. We are truly proud of our students who have been participating in this activity and hope we can continue to instill a love for reading. Here is why our Grade 3 and 4 students like SEVstoryline: Jan Bartu It is so much fun! I am learning and having fun at the same time. I love the stories. My favorite was The Gruffalo. Korel GÜNER I love SEVstoryline because Ms. Moira reads a book and we answer her questions. It is very fun!
