260 Grade 7 Aquaponıcs Project Aquaponics is a sustainable method of food production combining aquaculture (raising aquatic animals) and hydroponics (cultivating plants in water with added nutrients). In an aquaponic system, the fish provide the nutrients the plants need and the plants purify the water by consuming those nutrients. The Aquaponics Project: Students in groups designed their own aquaponics system, labeled it and briefly explained how it worked, which plants and fish to use and the possible problems that may occur. They compared it to hydroponics and discussed the pros and cons of each system. Shawn J. Ward Sırma Göknur Zeynep EROL In our Core English lesson, we did a project titled Aquaponics. I loved it because I learned about a system that didn’t use soil to grow plants. The definition of Aquaponics is the combination of aquaculture (growing fish and other aquatic animals) and hydroponics that grows fish and plants together in one integrated system. This project was group work and I drew the system. An Aquaponics System is: 1) fish produce waste 2) microbes and worms convert waste to fertilizer for plants 3) plants filter water that returns to the fish This system is very interesting but not very easy to apply because it needs patience and you have to be very careful about which type of fish and plant to use. Demir DAVRAN Aquaponics is a really useful system. It reuses water. Plants grow with the same water that fish live in. Then, the water comes back to the fish. The fish waste provides an organic food source for the plants and the plants naturally filter the water for the fish. Tilapia is the most recommended fish for Aquaponics and the most recommended plant is lettuce. Some plants have higher nutritional demands and will only do well in a heavily stocked, well established Aquaponic system such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and beans. Doruk ON This school term, we did a project called ‘’Aquaponics’’ with our CE teacher Ms.Göknur. In the Aquaponics project, we made an Aquaponics system that reuses the water that fish swim in and uses it to grow plants. Aquaponics makes plants healthier than normal because the waste that fish produce is used as a fertilizer for plants. We wrote the benefits and difficulties of using an Aquaponics system. We also wrote the type of fish to use, ones that are the best for an Aquaponics system. I think this project was fun to do and I learned a lot about aquaponics!
