265 Grade 7 CE Hydroponıcs Project Hydroponics is a subset of hydroculture and is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions, in water, without soil. Terrestrial plants may be grown with their roots in the mineral solution only, or in an inert medium, such as perlite or gravel. The Students Hydroponics Project: The students have learned how hands-on hydroponics works by growing their own plants in rockwool trays using the floating raft method. There were many steps to this year-long project. Shawn J. Ward Sırma Göknur Defne USLU In our CE lessons, we usually do projects. Today, I am going to introduce you to one of my favorite projects; Hydroponics. By the way, my name is Defne Uslu, and I am a 7th grader at SEV. Firstly, Hydroponics is the method of growing plants in the nutrients that they need instead of soil. Each of us found a world problem that we can solve by using Hydroponics. My world problem was “economy rout”. We can solve economy rout with Hydroponics because the traditional way of growing produce is more expensive, so many people can’t buy vegetables and fruit. That will bring crime, hunger, and death. When people stop buying, farmers will stop planting crops. Undeveloped countries’ economy mostly depends on agriculture, so their economy will have a downfall. If we use Hydroponics, there will be a lot of produce for a really cheap price. After, we designed our system. I used construction paper, cotton and little erasers in the shape of vegetables to build my system. So far this is my second favorite project. I am sure that if you haven’t done this project yet, you will really enjoy doing it in 7th grade. That’s all I’m going to say today. Thank you for your time. Mira ŞAR This year in Core English we did a project called Hydroponics. We first learned what Hydroponics was. Hydroponics is a system that is used to grow plants without soil. It also reuses water. Secondly, we chose a world problem to solve with Hydroponics. You probably thought that our world problems were climate change, too much usage of natural resources. Yes, of course, we considered them too but actually, we picked way more creative problems like lack of education, police brutality, immigration and so on. At first, you may think that these problems have nothing to do with growing plants without soil. That’s exactly what makes this project amazing. We made connections that show us actually everything is connected and solving environmental problems could be the key to solve a lot of serious problems. We later made a sketch of our system. All of us understand things in a different way so this was good for visual thinkers. Normally, the way hydroponic system reuses water but I thought this wasn’t enough. So, I built a system where we also get the nutrients from waste. In the end, I was amazed by my friends’ projects. Besides learning a lot about science, we also learned that nothing is impossible and all of us think in a unique and beautiful way.
