26 Ceylin SÜTCÜ This year I joined WSC again and participated in the Izmir Round which was hosted at our school. In WSC, even if you don’t have knowledge about the curriculum, you can get a thousand medals, even from the topics that you never expected that you had an interest in. For this reason it makes you want to learn, search and explore new subjects. My team got 27 medals and I personally got medals from debating, collaborative writing and scholars challenge (in all of the categories). We as a team placed in the top 10. I have been to other Global and Regional Rounds. I have always had so much fun and these experiences helped me not only to express myself better, but to also be a better person. I know my friends who are new and have yet to attend a Global round feel and will feel the same as me. To help you better understand WSC you need to know that there are 4 parts to this competition. These are the Team Debate, Collaborative Writing, Scholar’s Challenge and Scholar’s Bowl. Each part has different titles that you have to work for separately but they are connected under one theme. This club has expanded our horizons and allowed us to open doors that were previously locked to us. You can probably tell by now that I really appreciate the work in the World Scholar’s Cup. Imagine your life as an empty painting table. The colors are your talents, skills, and emotions. The paint brushes that you use are your training and experiences. The thicker the brush, the better the training and experience gained. For me this club is a very thick brush because of our teachers. We wouldn’t be here if we didn’t have the best teachers. They play a huge role in our successes. Especially, Mr. Ward. He helped us so much to become the best debaters that we could have ever been. Lastly, I want to thank the Alpacas which is the real reason I am here. They were what made me join this club in the beginning. I have really enjoyed being in this club. Throughout the WSC journey have I learned more than I have learned the past 13 years of my life! I’m not joking, I have made new friends and I can say that I am not the same as I was when I first joined World Scholar’s Cup 3 years ago and I can’t be more glad. So thank you... Damla PİRİŞTİNA Hi, my name is Damla and I am from the class 6C. Today I want to talk about the things that we did in WSC in December. When we came to the school, I thought I was going to die because of a heart attack from too much excitement. We went to the teachers’ room and took our name cards. After the opening ceremony, we started debating. In the first round we debated with TED Ankara. We won! In the second round we faced MEF International School. We lost, but now I have a great friend called Kamilla who I met at that debate (she debates so well). In the third round, we debated with UKEP. We won again! At the end of the debates we won twice and lost once. While debating, we had a lot of fun and we met new people. In the afternoon we did the collaborative writing. There we chose one topic and wrote a number of pages about the topic. After that we did the scholar’s challenge, which is basically an exam. We had 120 questions and were given 45 minutes to complete it. The questions were silly, but you need to be smart to answer them! After that, we went home and we slept. The next day was more exciting and even more challenging. We started with the opening ceremony. At the opening ceremony they talked about the scholars bowl. The Scholar’s bowl is a group activity! You have 15 or 5 or 10 seconds to answer the questions with your team. After that came the best part. GETTİNG OUR OWN ALPACAS! At the start my biggest dream was to have an alpaca. I got a small white alpaca! My alpaca’s name is Cheryl and I love her! After getting our alpacas we had the debate showcase. In debate showcases the best debaters of the schools debated. It was a great thing to watch! Then there was the SCHOLARS SHOW where everyone performed their talent. I played the piano. My favorite part of the show was when the girl did karate. I had a lot of fun watching it. Lastly, they announced the winners at the award ceremony. Our school, SEV, got 248 medals! That is super! We also got a lot of trophies. Do you want to know about the results? ALL OF THE SEV TEAMS (except one) WON AND NOW WE ARE GOING TO GO TO THE GLOBAL ROUND! It was an amazing experience and I have one thing to say to you: if you love debating doing fun tests, dancing, getting an alpaca and most importantly, having fun? You really need to choose WSC as your club next year. Thank you so much for taking 3 minutes to read my writing. I hope you learned something. PWAA!
