I am honored because the primary campus is filled with wonderful students who will surely be the leaders of tomorrow. I have felt privileged every time I have been invited to the campus for the events that showcase the learning that goes on every day. This year, I saw classrooms full of serious young men and women teaching their parents in their portfolio presentations, what they had learned throughout the whole year. I saw athletic children performing traditional dances and singing during National Sovereignty and Children’s Day. I got to read a favorite book to grades 2 and 3 during library week. I was able to visit the kindergarten classes and listen to them practice their English. I watched students discover not only how to harvest olives, but how to process them and use them as food, as soap and even cologne. All of this learning is possible at the SEV Primary Campus for several reasons. Wonderful and bright students who have supportive parents is a big reason. But just as importantly, the school has hard-working and creative teachers who are always developing and implementing lessons that appeal to a wide variety of learners. The school also has a great administrative team who set the directions for learning that respect traditions but also push and lead toward a world-view that respects multiculturalism, the environment, gender equity and working collaboratively. Of course I can’t forget the hardworking and friendly support staff, who keep the school a suitable and friendly place to learn. You can probably tell by now that I am a big fan of the people who learn, teach and work here. There are many schools in Turkey and Izmir, but this school is very special because it treats children as human beings and encourages them to learn across disciplines in a supportive environment. I wish the best for students and staff – I know that many are looking forward to a well-deserved break soon. Have a great summer! Tim Huttemann
