56 THE IMPORTANCE OF GROUP WORK IN KINDERGARTEN Our English lessons at SEV Kindergarten are full of varied activities. We especially enjoy working in groups since it creates opportunities for cooperative and active learning. In SEV Kindergarten, we develop cooperation, teamwork, social and communication skills by incorporating small group activities into our daily schedule. The concept of students working in groups also promotes a setting where collaboration and cooperation are valued and produce better results, teaching the students valuable life-long skills that are important in their daily life and future professional workplace. By carefully organising the nature of groups, according to student needs, learning styles and interests, we immerse students in different types of tasks. In our theme “All about me” we learned body parts by tracing our friend’s body and coloring it in together. In the theme “Being Healthy”, we revised food vocabulary by creating a restaurant and ordering things on each other’s menu. By creating multiple learning stations in our classroom, we add variety to the learning process. These activities are a great opportunity for all children involved to further develop their social skills through structured interaction and using language to express their thoughts and needs with peers to accomplish a task.
