60 CLIL ın Kındergarten ( Socıal Studıes, Scıence & Math) Through a rich expressive context, students are able to learn the English language in a natural and exciting atmosphere. This is where the innovative teaching approach CLIL steps in. In Content and Language Integrated Learning, content drives the language learning process and language is applied to learn the content. This essentially means teaching subjects as social studies, science, and math through the medium of English. Pupils learn not only everyday language but also subject specific vocabulary naturally and in context. Thus, learning English these days is a very enjoyable experience. And not surprisingly, current English lessons have been a blast for our kindergarteners. As you can tell, we have been busy with examining and experimenting on various topics and themes with heaps of hands-on activities. In our social science lessons, we discovered and learned about healthy and unhealthy food, hygiene and illnesses, natural disasters, planets, plants and animals, how to protect our world and so on. We have been engrossed in all the experiments we conducted in class. Have you ever wondered why some objects float in water and others sink? Then try the salty science, and float eggs in water. Did you know that we can regrow carrots by putting carrot tops in water? We learn how soap protects us from germs, too. Germs exits as soon as soap gets into the scene. Try the pepper experiment, and you will see how. By the way, have you ever thought why volcanoes erupt? Put some mint into a bottle of coke and you will observe what this phenomenon looks like. Have you wondered why arctic animals never get cold? They have blubber fat layer beneath their skin. You can make yourself a blubber bag at home for bitter winters. Plus, minus, equals to, not equals to, greater than, less than… Add those numbers up and subtract this from the total. Wait, we need our beans, beads and teddy bears for this. We know 7 – 5 = 2, which is less than 5. In our math lessons, we are not only learning numbers but also matching, sorting, adding and subtracting them. Moreover, we compare and contrast things by using Venn Diagrams and graphs to make our mathematical thinking visible. How many brothers or sisters do you have? Let us conduct a classroom survey, and visualise it in graphs. Ask the question, put some tally marks here and there, and done. Kindergarten math is fun! The world is full of wonders. Therefore, we have so many questions to answer and so many things to explore. We have so many songs, projects, games, experiments and stories to enjoy and learn more. Bring it on because we are ready for even more. İlayda Ercelebi
