Everyone is different and has different opinions. We describe things and tell why they are important to us. R zgar KAZIMOĞLU We do opinion writing to see and listen to our friends’ opinions. When we write our opinions we share our feelings with our friends. We all have different things we love! Opinion writing is fun because can write about what we believe is true for ourselves. Eren KÖYMEN Opinion writing is fun because we study something and learn how to write about something we like. Opinion writing is important because if we didn’t write it, we wouldn’t know how to say something is the best and explain why it’s the best. Zeynep ERGÜNEY We are learning about how to write opinion correctly. It’s important because we express our feelings. It’s fun to write what I think! I like to tell my friends my opinions. Moira Simes Olcay Şerbetçi AND THE AWARD GOES TO... Fourth grade SEV students are developing their skills as opinion writers. At this point, students are accustomed to a Writing Workshop classroom environment. The general format of the Writing Workshop is a short mini-lesson delivered by the teacher, active engagement where students try out a new skill, independent writing time, followed by sharing time. Students have Writing Workshop twice a week in 80 minute blocks. Students’ growth in the ability to express their own beliefs and values has already been immense. Fourth grade SEV students have a lot to share and come to class with strong ideas which prove to be good material for their writing. They spend much of the class time developing strong claims and reasons to support their claims. A key element of this unit is learning how to judge fairly. Students began by bringing in 5 of their favorite objects and deciding which one they liked best and why. In later lessons, students begin using comparative and superlative grammar constructions to describe the objects and give evidence to support their ideas. At the end of the unit, students will hold their own Kids Choice Awards and present their writing. Students are steadily creating stronger pieces of opinion writing, and are excited and motivated to share their worldview through their writing with others.
