S E V E C E N 2 0 2 0 111 Kimberly Price READINGWORKSHOP: READING FOR INFORMATION During unit 2 of the Reading Workshop, students are exploring non-fiction texts and learning to read for information. They are examining the differences between fiction and non-fiction texts and learning to identify text features such as headings, sub-headings, tables of contents, captions, and glossaries. Students enjoy reading non-fiction texts about animals, sports, and the biographies of well-known people from history. The Reading Workshop model maximizes learning by implementing a student-centered approach that involves a mini-lesson and modeling of the lesson objectives followed up group and individual learning time. Students are guided to read the next level of their abilities while becoming independent readers and developing critical comprehension and analytical skills.
